Best Practices for Adding Media to Exams

Image, video, and audio files can be added to ExamSoft to a question stem as an inline image, added to answer choice(s), or as a question level attachment.

Below are a list of supported file types and maximum file sizes:

Images  – 3MB Max (Max Resolution 1920×1980 pixels)

  • png
  • jpg
  • jpeg
  • gif

Audio – 15MB Max

  • MP4
  • MP3

Video – 150 MB Max

  • AVI
  • MOV
  • MP4

PDF – 20 MB Max

Note that the total size of all attachments and inline images combined on an assessment cannot exceed a maximum of 200MB.

Best Practices

Images and videos for questions should be attached in one of the image or video file formats listed above.

PDF’s of images is not an appropriate file format to attach images to an assessment.

Images or videos that are not part of an answer choice should be attached as question level attachments.  This allows the exam takers to close and reopen the image as many times as necessary when navigating to the question with the attached image.  It also allows the user to resize the picture as necessary.

If it is necessary to attach multiple images to one question, Microsoft PowerPoint can be utilized to save multiple images as a single image file.
