  • University of Pennsylvania
  • Professor and Vice-Chairman for Research and Education in Neurosurgery
  • Research Interests: Mechanisms and neuropathologies of traumatic brain injury, neuroregenerative medicine

Douglas Smith has mentored over 26 postdoctoral trainees and 14 predoctoral students. Smith has over 25 years of experience studying mechanisms and neuropathologies of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Performing parallel studies using experimental models and human subjects, his group has played a central role in uncovering mechanisms that trigger persisting neuropathological processes after TBI. His background is highly relevant to this application, specifically his long history in neuroregenerative medicine, including the discovery and implementation of a new axon stretch growth mechanism to create transplantable nervous tissue constructs to repair nervous system damage.
