Books We Read Online: HathiTrust Temporary Emergency Services Back!

[Includes excerpts from communications of the RUL Electronic Resources Librarian]

Good news for all of us scrambling before another semester that starts with remote learning as the only option:
the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) program was reinstated last week.

What does it mean for you?

In sum, it will make your life easier. If you are not on campus, many print books held by the libraries are temporarily available electronically to current Rutgers students, faculty, and staff on the HathiTrust platform.

How can you find these books?

There are two ways to find and access the ETAS books: browsing the HathiTrust platform and discovering them in QuickSearch.
1. HathiTrust Platform
After linking to HathiTrust, log in with your NetID and password to access these books, which have links labelled Temporary Access. Click “Temporary Access” and then click the “CHECK OUT” button to read the book.
2. QuickSearch
In addition, we have re-added links in QuickSearch to all the ETAS monographs and multi-part monographs (over 700,000 books total). These are the exact same links that were in QuickSearch last time we used ETAS. Each link displays on the print record for the book (For example, see https://bit.ly/3f46jhY). Each link is labelled “HathiTrust Temporary Emergency Access Service.”
When you click the link, you will be prompted to log in with your NetID and password. Then you will be taken to the book’s record in HathiTrust, where you will see a link saying “Temporary Access.” Click “Temporary Access” and then click the “CHECK OUT” button to read the book.
Anything else I need to know?

  • Log in with your NetID: ETAS books require logging in with a NetID, which means that patrons without a valid NetID cannot access them. This restriction is placed by HathiTrust to ensure the program complies with copyright laws.
  • No pdf downloading: You must read the books in your web browser. ETAS books cannot be downloaded.
  • One-hour check-out periods: Checkouts are in one-hour increments and will auto-renew if you are actively paging through the book.
  • No physical copy of the same book for checkout: If a book is available through ETAS, our physical copies are not available for checkout, Click and Collect, Interlibrary Loan, or other services.
  • Please be considerate: Rutgers has access to a limited number of copies of each book (generally equal to the number of physical copies we have). If all HathiTrust electronic copies are checked out, you will not be able to check out the book until a copy is returned. Please return books as soon as you are finished with them so others can access the books.
